Softfix web portal development team collaborating in a modern office
Web portal development company in India

One login. Everything they need. Fewer calls to your office.

Customers checking order status, vendors uploading invoices, dealers placing orders, staff downloading payslips. Right now they probably call or email someone for all of it. A web portal lets them help themselves, any time of day — and Softfix builds them.

Portal vs website vs web application

So what makes something a portal?

The words get used interchangeably, which doesn't help. Here's the simplest way we explain the difference to clients.

Public website shown on a laptop screen Website

Tells people about you

Public pages anyone can read. No login, and everyone sees the same thing.

Private login portal shown on a tablet Portal Best fit

A private front door for a group

A private, login-based area for one audience, such as customers, vendors or students. Each user sees their own orders, documents, payments and updates, often drawn from several internal systems.

Business software application on a desktop Web application

Software built for a specific task

Browser-based software built for a specific task, such as billing or project tracking. All portals are web applications, but not all web applications are portals.

Process

How to build a custom web portal, step by step

A portal only delivers value if people use it. For that reason, we test early versions with a few real users from each group before building the complete portal.

Most portals go live in 8 to 14 weeks. Big enterprise portals with many integrations take longer and launch in phases.

  1. Step 01

    Map the users

Who logs in, what they come for, and which calls or emails the portal should replace.

  2. Step 02

    Find the data

We identify where your orders, invoices and documents are stored today and plan how the portal will access them.

  3. Step 03

    Prototype and test

Clickable screens shown to a handful of real customers, vendors or staff. Then we fix what confused them.

  4. Step 04

    Build and integrate

Development takes place in two-week sprints with a demo at the end of each, and the portal is connected to your back-office systems along the way.

  5. Step 05

    Pilot, then roll out

The portal is first released to a small group for two to three weeks of feedback, and then opened to all users.

  6. Step 06

    Watch the usage

We check what people actually use and keep improving it under a support plan.

Small business team using a simple dealer portal Small business

Portal development for small business

A small business does not need a large system. A simple portal where 50 dealers can view their ledger and place repeat orders can save your accounts team many hours of phone calls each week. You can begin with one user group and one or two functions, and expand later.

Enterprise office with multiple departments using a single portal Enterprise

Custom portal development for enterprises

Enterprise portals involve several audiences, multiple back-end systems and detailed security reviews. We handle SSO, data residency, audit logs and IT compliance requirements, and roll out the portal region by region.

Mainly how many user types there are, how many systems it connects to, and whether payments are involved. These sizes cover most of what we're asked for. Share your details and we'll send an itemised quote.

FAQ

Portal questions we get a lot

How much does custom portal development cost?
The cost depends on the number of user types, the integrations required and whether online payments are needed. A portal for a single audience costs considerably less than a multi-vendor marketplace. We provide an itemised estimate after a short call.
How long does it take to build a web portal?
A simple portal takes six to eight weeks. A multi-role portal with integrations takes three to four months, and enterprise portals are usually launched in phases.
Why hire a web portal development company in India?
Good developers at lower cost, and familiarity with what Indian users expect: OTP logins, UPI payments, WhatsApp alerts and GST invoices. We're in Lucknow and work with clients in India and abroad.
Can the portal show data from our ERP or Tally?
Yes. This is one of the most common requirements. Orders, ledgers, stock and invoices can be displayed live or synchronised on a schedule, depending on what your system supports.
Will users need to download an app?
No. The portal works in any mobile or desktop browser. If you would like a home-screen icon and push notifications, it can be made installable, or a separate mobile app can be built later.
Who owns the portal and the user data?
You do: code, hosting account, domain and every user record. There are no licence fees and nothing locks you in.
Let's plan it

Who should log in to your portal?

Tell us the user group, what they need to do, and which systems hold the data. We'll reply within a working day with questions and a rough plan.
