Legacy application modernization
That desktop app your team has used since 2010? We rebuild it for the browser and for phones. All the business rules you depend on stay exactly as they are.
We help businesses across multiple industries build scalable, secure and future-ready digital products. Our team combines deep technical expertise with industry knowledge to deliver custom software solutions that drive growth.
Let's Talk
Softfix is a legacy system modernization company in India. Our office is in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. For the first week or two we mostly just read code. VB6, COBOL, .NET 2.0, whatever you've got. We don't change a single line until we know what each screen and report is doing. After that we move things over a bit at a time, and nobody in your office has to stop billing or booking in the meantime.
Before
After
Your staff move to the new screens one module at a time. Till a module is tested and signed off, the old screen is still there if they need it.
In most companies old software does not stop working one fine day. What happens is it gets a little slower every year, the risks go up and so does the maintenance bill. If three or more points below apply to you, we should probably talk.
Ask anyone how the billing module works and they say "Sharma ji knows." Sharma ji retires next year.
Your version stopped getting security patches back in 2019 or so, and nobody is quite sure what that means for you.
Want Razorpay on it? A CRM? A small app for the field team? Each one turns into a six-week headache.
Accounts starts the month-end report at 10 am and goes for chai. Twice.
A lot of important work has slowly moved out of the system and into Excel sheets.
Your server, licence and AMC charges increase every year but the software itself has not improved.
You put up a job post for a VB6 developer. Three weeks later, two CVs. One of them is retired.
It only opens on the office desktops, so your sales guy sitting at a client's place can't even check if the stock is there.
Waiting feels safe, we get it. But every year you wait the job gets bigger, and usually it ends up being done in a panic after something has already broken.
Unsupported frameworks and old Windows servers are among the first things attackers look for when they scan for weak systems.
DPDP and GDPR both want encryption and proper access logs. A lot of older systems just weren't built to keep those.
Most of what your company knows about the system sits in one person's head. If they leave, it walks out with them.
Large buyers ask about APIs, single sign-on and uptime before they sign. "We'll check and revert" doesn't close those deals.
Every quick patch on old code makes the next change slower, and a little scarier to push live.
Old hardware, extended support contracts and specialist contractors all get more expensive with each passing year.
Some of our projects involve a single desktop application. Others involve an ERP, a few databases and a set of old scripts that nobody wants to delete in case something breaks. Our IT modernization services cover this full range, from smaller code clean-up jobs to a complete legacy system migration.

We handle on-premise to cloud migration on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud. Not every part of a system needs to go to the cloud, and we will tell you which parts are better left where they are.
We take services out of the large application one at a time. Usually we start with billing or reporting, since these tend to cause the most problems.
If your data sits in Access, FoxPro or SQL Server 2008, we shift it to PostgreSQL or a managed cloud database. Before we call it done, we match row counts between the old and new database, table by table.
Got an ERP that's been customised so much nobody dares touch it? We move it onto something easier to maintain, and your reports and approval flows come along as they are.
COBOL, VB6, Classic ASP, Delphi, PowerBuilder, we work with all of these. Step one is always going through the old code and writing down what it really does. You'd be surprised what turns up. The rebuild only starts after that.
New runtime, new hosting, and as little code change as we can get away with. Usually the quickest and safest way off an old platform.
Sometimes the logic is fine and it's the code underneath that's a mess. We sort out the structure so the next change doesn't take a month.
Tests go in first, then the clean-up. Nothing changes for your users. Your developers just stop being scared of opening the code.
We upgrade .NET Framework to .NET 8, AngularJS to React, PHP 5 to PHP 8 and Java 8 to Java 21, including the upgrade that has been on your to-do list for years.
We start by putting proper APIs in front of the old system. New apps can hook into those right away, and meanwhile we replace the core quietly behind them.
Crowded forms, a dozen tabs on one screen, buttons nobody has clicked in years. We redesign around how your people actually work now, and new joiners pick it up much faster.
We package applications in Docker so they run the same way on a developer's laptop, a test server and production.
Most of our projects use two or three of these services together. The assessment helps us work out the right combination for you.
Start with an assessmentBuilding something completely new can look attractive. But an old system usually contains years of business rules, and many of them are not documented anywhere else. Before recommending either option, we go through the questions below with our clients.
| Question | Modernize | Rebuild from scratch |
|---|---|---|
| Is the business logic still right? | Yes, mostly. It's the tech that's tired. | No, the way you work has changed a lot. |
| Can the business pause? | No. Old and new have to run side by side. | A longer parallel period is acceptable. |
| Risk | Lower. Each phase is small and reversible. | Higher. Value arrives near the end. |
| When do you see results? | Within weeks, module by module | Often after many months |
| Cost profile | Spread out, paid per phase | Large upfront investment |
| Data | Migrated gradually, with backward compatibility | One big data migration at cutover |
In the projects we have seen, a full rebuild turns out to be the right choice less often than clients expect. If it is the better option for you, we will say so.
We do not switch off the old system on a Friday and hope the new one works on Monday. Each step below is kept small so that it can be rolled back if there is a problem.
We review the code, database, integrations and security of your current system. You receive a written report, whether or not you continue with us afterwards.
Then we go part by part: rehost this, re-platform that, refactor here, application rearchitecting there. What goes first depends on what's riskiest and what pays back soonest.
We start with one real module running on live data. If there are gaps in the plan, this stage usually shows them.
Data migration and zero-downtime migration happen one module at a time. Old and new run in sync till your users tell us they're happy.
Automated builds, tests and monitoring get set up. Otherwise five years from now you'd be calling us about this system too.
Once everything has moved, the old system is switched off and archived safely, and we continue to provide support.
A better-looking interface is useful, but the bigger benefit is in daily operations, with fewer emergency calls and fewer situations where the system holds the business back.
Talk to an engineerDead code goes, duplicate logic gets merged, tests get added. A two-day change takes two days again.
Old libraries swapped out, known holes patched, and proper role-based access so not everyone can see everything.
We rewrite slow database queries and add caching, so screens that used to take many seconds to load open much faster.
If you are opening a new branch or adding users, the system can grow without you buying more servers.
We use autoscaling, managed backups and pay-as-you-go hosting where it makes financial sense for you.
Your existing reports, file formats and connections with partners continue to work during and after the migration.
We connect the new system with payment gateways, Tally, the GST portal, CRMs and courier services, so adding new tools later is simpler.
Where it is needed, we give the system a cleaner structure so different teams can work on it without getting in each other's way.
The application is moved to cloud servers without major changes. This is the quickest way to get off old hardware, but the application itself stays mostly the same.
We make some changes so the application can use managed databases, containers and autoscaling. For most companies this gives the best balance of cost and benefit.
The application is redesigned into services built for the cloud. It takes more effort at the start, but running costs are lower and scaling is easier later.
Since the work is done in phases, the payments are also spread across phases. Most clients start with an assessment and then approve one phase at a time. The total cost depends on the size of the codebase, the number of integrations and the condition of the existing data.
Start small, get the plan
This includes a complete system audit, a written report and a phased plan. The report belongs to you, even if another company does the work.
One module at a time
Each phase has its own scope, price and completion date, and you can pause or change direction between phases.
Long-term programme
This is for large programmes that run for a year or longer, with engineers, QA and a project manager working only on your systems.
Share the programming language, the database and roughly how old the system is. It is fine if you are not sure about some details. One of our engineers will reply within one working day.
