Generative AI development

From prompt to production.

Anyone can call an LLM API. Getting it to answer correctly, cheaply and safely — a thousand times a day, in front of real users — is the actual work. We build generative AI features end-to-end: prompt and RAG for speed, fine-tuning where it earns its keep, guardrails on top, and cost tracking from day one.

What we build

Six kinds of generative AI products, one engineering team.

Text, images, code, audio, video or agents — the same discipline applies: get the data right, evaluate honestly, deploy carefully, watch the bill.

  • Citations in answers
  • Streaming UI

AI agents and workflow automation

AI agents & workflow automation

Agents that read tickets, run tools, fill forms and hand back to a human when unsure — with logging and approval gates.

Prompt vs RAG vs fine-tune

Which one to reach for, and in what order.

Most teams jump to fine-tuning too early. Nine times out of ten, better prompts and retrieval solve the problem for a fraction of the effort.

Step 1 · Always

Better prompts

System messages, few-shot examples, structured output (JSON), chain-of-thought. Cheapest to change, fastest to test.

  • Cost: lowest
  • Time to change: minutes
  • Good for: tone, format, extraction, simple tasks
Most chosen
Step 2 · Knowledge

Retrieval (RAG)

Vector store over your own docs, PDFs, tickets, databases. The model answers from them, with citations.

  • Cost: moderate (embeddings + inference)
  • Time to change: hours to days
  • Good for: document Q&A, support, search
Step 3 · Only when needed

Fine-tuning / LoRA

Teach the model your style, tone and edge cases. Worth it once prompts and retrieval have plateaued.

  • Cost: highest (data + GPU hours)
  • Time to change: weeks
  • Good for: brand voice, narrow domains, small models
Anatomy of a RAG pipeline

What sits under the chat box, layer by layer.

The chat interface is the easy part. These are the pieces that make it correct, cheap and safe in production.

  1. 01

    Intent & routing

Classify the query, pick the right tool or model, decide if it needs retrieval.

  2. 02

    Retrieval

Hybrid search (BM25 + vectors) over your knowledge base, then rerank the top matches.

  3. 03

    Context assembly

Trim the chunks, keep the citations, fit inside the token budget.

  4. 04

    Model call

Streamed response from the chosen LLM, with prompt caching and fallback if the primary is slow.

  5. 05

    Guardrails

PII redaction, jailbreak check, hallucination score, refusal rules. Answer blocked if any fail.

  6. 06

    Eval & telemetry

Every call logged with latency, cost and quality score. Weekly eval runs on a golden set.

Model selection

Which LLM to use, and when to mix them.

We're not tied to one vendor. Most production stacks use two or three, picked per task, based on cost, latency and accuracy.

Use case Best fit Why Cost band
Chat & complex reasoning GPT-4o / Claude Sonnet Best accuracy on multi-step tasks $$$
High-volume extraction GPT-4o-mini / Haiku Reliable JSON, ~10× cheaper $
Brand-tuned writing Fine-tuned Llama 3 / Mistral Consistent voice, self-hosted $$
Embeddings & search text-embedding-3 / E5 / BGE Fast, cheap, multilingual ¢
On-prem / regulated Llama 3 / Mistral / Qwen Data never leaves your VPC $$$
Image generation SDXL / Flux / DALL·E Depends on style & speed $$
Guardrails & evaluation

What stops a generative AI feature from embarrassing you.

LLMs don't have a sense of truth. Guardrails and evaluation are how we stop them from confidently making things up in front of your customers.

  • PII redaction & prompt scrubbing

Phone numbers, emails, IDs removed before they leave your network — and re-inserted in the response.

  • Hallucination scoring

Answer checked against retrieved sources. Below a threshold → falls back to "I don't know" or a human.

  • Jailbreak & prompt-injection defence

Tools and rules isolate user input from system instructions. Tool calls are policy-checked.

  • Golden-set evaluation

A fixed set of test questions with known-correct answers, run on every prompt or model change.

GenAI development cost

What a generative AI build actually costs.

Build cost depends on the use case and how much of your data needs preparing. Run cost is mostly tokens — we design for that on day one.

Prototype

One feature, proven

A single chatbot or extraction task, working on your real data with an eval set.

Typical timeline: 3–5 weeks
Most common Production feature

Live GenAI in your product

Many features, one foundation

Shared vector store, prompt library, model gateway, evaluation harness and governance.

On run cost (the number most teams forget)

Token spend is the new cloud bill. We budget it like one: prompt caching for repeated context, cheaper models for easy calls, batching where latency allows, and a dashboard that shows cost per feature, per customer and per day. If the bill is trending wrong, we tell you before your finance team does.

FAQ

Generative AI questions, straight answers

What's the difference between GenAI and "regular" AI/ML?
Traditional ML predicts a value or class ("will this customer churn?"). GenAI creates new content — text, images, code, audio — by learning patterns from huge corpora. Different toolkits, different evaluation, different failure modes.
Should I fine-tune, or is RAG enough?
Start with RAG. Fine-tuning is worth it once you need a specific tone, a narrow domain, or a smaller/cheaper model to perform like a large one. For 80% of business use cases, RAG on a strong foundation model is faster, cheaper and easier to update.
How do you stop hallucinations?
Three layers: (1) ground answers in retrieved sources with citations, (2) score each answer for factual overlap with those sources, (3) refuse or escalate below a threshold. Nothing is perfect — but the failure mode becomes "I don't know", not confident nonsense.
Which LLM do you recommend — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or open models?
It depends on the task. GPT-4o and Claude are excellent generalists. Smaller models like GPT-4o-mini and Haiku handle high-volume extraction. Llama 3, Mistral and Qwen make sense when you need self-hosting or data residency. Most stacks we build mix two or three.
How much does a GenAI feature cost to run every month?
Roughly: a support chatbot handling 10k conversations a month costs a few hundred dollars in tokens. Image generation and video get expensive fast. We always model run cost during scoping, and design for caching and cheaper fallbacks from the start.
Is my data safe if we use third-party LLM APIs?
Enterprise tiers of OpenAI, Anthropic and Google contractually exclude your data from training and offer zero-retention endpoints. For tighter requirements, we deploy open models in your own cloud (AWS Bedrock, Azure AI, GCP Vertex or self-hosted vLLM) so nothing leaves your VPC.
Who owns the prompts, models and data?
You do. Prompts, fine-tuned weights, vector indexes, evaluation sets and pipelines all live in your accounts and are assigned to you in the contract. No lock-in.
